1965 UK pop hit for "Twinkle",   whose real name was Lynn Annette Ripley (15 July 1948 – 21 May 2015).   A perfect 60's Girl Group record,  huge in UK and Europe,   but nearly unknown in the USA  (as unfortunately happened back then).    Unusually sophisticated lyric and melody for a Girl Group song.  Covered in the 80's by Morrissey and The Smiths. Lyrics: Golden lights displaying your name Golden lights, a whole lot o' fame Oh my darling Why did you change? Boy in a...

Written by Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy,   this great 1965 blue-eyed soul  record features a powerhouse,  swaggering arrangement done in a British appropriation of a Phil Spector or Teddy Randazzo record.  Les Reed and His Orchestra provide the orchestration   and the Breakaways provide backup girl harmonies.    Jerry Ragovoy is better known for writing the R&B roof-shakers  "Piece Of My Heart"    and "Stay With Me (Baby).     "Easier" was a big hit...

1969 hit for the American soft pop group,   The Arbors.   The Arbors were a foursome from Ann Arbor,  Michigan.   Prior to the late-60's,    they had established themselves as  a smooth,   society,  vocal group,    doing elegant harmonies after the style of The Lettermen,   or other "plaid sweater groups".   So it was really a departure for them when they started doing undisguised psychedelic music in the late 60's.  This single is a prime example...   Gotta...

In 2012,   Jeff Lynne,  formerly  of the Electric Light Orchestra,  huge in the 70's,  released his new re-recordings of the great ELO hits.   In the digital domain,  these hits take on a stunning new clarity,  nuance and power that 1970's technology could ill supply.     To my ear,  it also sounds as though Lynne has employed 3D HTRF sound:   the individual chords and voices seem to come from different spatial places in the room,  creating a dynamic,  highly musical effect...

Lossless FLAC version of the Walker Brothers' 1965 international hit. A real "wall-of-sound" recording... Not a Phil Spector production, but owes much to his sound: jangly, noisy, intense, muffled, with all the instruments mergeing into one another... and that is the very beauty of the record.

This is a digital enhancement I have done of the 1964 American pop recording, "A Little Bit Of Love (Can Hurt)", sung by a young Ginny Arnell (of "Dumb Head" fame). Wendy and Bonnie Flower were an American singing sister duo, who recorded the album, Genesis, in 1969 for Skye Records. The album was produced by Gary McFarland. At the time, McFarland was part owner of the Skye label, along with Latin percussionist Cal Tjader (who was Wendy and Bonnie's godfather) and jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó. Wendy and Bonnie grew up in Millbrae, California, in the San Francisco Bay suburbs. Their parents, Art and Jeane Flower, were professional musicians. In 1967,...

Classic 1968 Country-Western song which was a big comeback hit for Brenda Lee in 1968-69. She was impressed with Willie Nelson's earlier recording of the song.
